What is sworn translation?
Sworn translation is intended to validate documents written in foreign languages in Brazil or vice-versa. It also prevents any distortions or tampering eventually found in the foreign documents. The sworn translation must be delivered in hardcopy with all pages necessarily containing the Certified Public Translator’s official stamp.
In order to ensure its authenticity, the translator’s signature in a sworn translation is certified by a Notary Public, and – depending on the document – it also requires registration with the applicable Register of Deeds and Documents.
Under the Law, a sworn translation is required whenever a document written in a foreign language must be filed in court, or provided to Federal, State, or Municipal government agencies, besides entities maintained, guided or controlled by public authorities, pursuant to Section 18 of Decree No. 13609, dated October 21, 1943.
What is Consecutive Interpretation?
This is a basic technique of interpretation. During a speech, the interpreter takes notes and, following a specific time interval, she/he performs the interpretation.
As a result, this translation modality takes approximately twice as long as a simultaneous translation to be performed, and doesn’t allow for natural fluency in a presentation. On the other hand, it’s more accurate than simultaneous translation, and doesn’t require any special equipment for the audience.
What is Simultaneous Interpretation?
This is an interpreting method whereby the translator speaks virtually at the same time as the speaker. The audience (who is not knowledgeable of the speech language) may choose to listen to the translation by the headsets. Usually, the translator remains in an acoustically isolated booth, his/her voice is conveyed to the audience by the headsets. Simultaneous interpreting (translation) is often used in meetings and conferences for large audiences, and enables the speaker to provide the presentation without constant interruptions, as it would be the case in a consecutive interpreting work. It is worth mentioning that this type of interpreting requires greater technical background for the translator. That is why an additional (back-up) translator is usually hired for this interpreting method.
What is desktop publishing?
In translations, desktop publishing is a complementary service which ensures visual quality [sugestão para que o texto não passe a ideia de que somente com o serviço de ‘desktop publishing’ há qualidade] to the service design. The final/translated document layout will look similar to the original one. Whenever a document is provided only in paper form, desktop publishing aims to maintain text formatting, number of pages, table of contents, picture and illustration digitizing, elaboration of charts and tables as the original one. Delivery, unless otherwise specified by the customer, is made in the most appropriate software format, specifically tailored to the job, at discretion of the desktop publishing department; but whenever feasible, in MS-WORD®. The team in charge of these services is comprised of highly-qualified professionals, who perform the desktop publishing work in technical manuals and other projects, certifying that the customers will receive their documents in the same pattern as their original files, within a range of media.
